How much does a service dog cost and why?

It might surprise most but a fully trained service dog, specially taught to assist a wheelchair bound disabled human can cost $10,000 to $20,000. Much of the cost depends on what the dog is capable of doing. At this level most can open doors and dresser drawers, can retrieve fallen objects like keys, bark on command, do the general sit, lay-down and such commands, and even stay in one place for the human to use as an armchair and pull themselves up or forward. From what I’ve witnessed from these dogs is amazing. In a sentence I’d say they are as capable as a young teenager would be at assisting a disabled person. They might not cook and clean but most everything else is in their wheelhouse.
